About Normah Medical Specialist Centre

 

Normah Medical Specialist Centre (NMSC), located in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, is a not-for-profit private hospital owned by Sarawak Medical Centre Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Sarawak State Financial Secretary (SFS) Incorporation. Officially opened in August 1988, it is 16km from Kuching International Airport and 7km from Kuching City, and is widely recognised as a leading Normah Hospital Kuching and established Medical Specialist Centre.

For over 37 years, Normah Medical Specialist Centre has excelled in delivering the highest quality healthcare and service to all of our patients. Here at NMSC, we provide a comprehensive range of services including Health Screening Kuching and access to experienced specialists such as Eye Specialist Kuching, ENT Specialist Kuching, Gynaecologist Kuching, and Neurologist Kuching.

We have adopted the International Patient Safety Goals intended to promote specific improvements in patient safety. This local private hospital has come a long way from being a medical and surgical not-for-profit centre to a world-class healthcare provider today. As a leading Normah Hospital Kuching and established Medical Specialist Centre, it has achieved many accolades, including certification by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) since 2005.

Normah Medical Specialist Centre was also officially granted the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, a leading benchmark for quality improvement and patient safety in healthcare. NMSC has remained close to the hearts of both local residents and international patients, becoming the only private hospital in Borneo to be awarded JCI Accreditation five consecutive times (2011–2013, 2014–2017, 2018–2020, 2021–2023, 2024). This distinction reaffirms its commitment to delivering high standards of care, including services such as Health Screening Kuching, and strengthens its position as a preferred healthcare provider in the region.

In addition to primary care and general medicine, Normah Medical Specialist Centre offers a comprehensive range of secondary and tertiary services delivered by credentialed resident and visiting specialists. These include services provided by Eye Specialist Kuching, ENT Specialist Kuching, Gynaecologist Kuching, and Neurologist Kuching, alongside other disciplines such as orthopaedics, cardiology, general surgery, endoscopic surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics, urology, nephrology, oncology, and haematology.

NMSC has also been a pioneer in advanced procedures, having conducted open heart surgery since December 1994, further strengthening its reputation as a trusted Medical Specialist Centre in the region.

Patient care at Normah Medical Specialist Centre is supported by a 24-hour Accident & Emergency team, ensuring continuous and reliable care at this trusted Normah Hospital Kuching. The facility includes an in-house pharmacy, blood bank, laboratory and pathology services, diagnostic imaging, lithotripsy, renal dialysis programme, and rehabilitation care—further strengthening its role as a comprehensive Medical Specialist Centre.

The Pathology Department provides a full range of testing services and is equipped with a Blood Bank, supported by blood donor collection programmes and component processing services. This supports a wide spectrum of healthcare needs, including preventive services such as Health Screening Kuching.

In addition to routine radiological services, the Diagnostic Imaging unit offers advanced technology and is well-equipped with a 256-slice Advanced MSCT, 1.5 Tesla MRI, Mammography, X-Ray, ultrasound, orthopantomogram, cephalometric, and densitometry services. These facilities support various specialist services, including Eye Specialist Kuching, ENT Specialist Kuching, and Neurologist Kuching, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Our Milestones

Jul 1988

On 4th July 1988, Normah Medical Specialist Centre admitted its first in-house patient.

Normah Medical Specialist Centre had created history by being the first private hospital established in Sarawak. It was officially declared opened on 11th August, 1988.

Sep 1994

In September 1994, a RM11 million Cardiac Centre was set up in Normah Medical Specialist Centre.

On 24th December 1994, Normah’s Cardiac Centre created an unprecedented achievement in Sarawak and the region of Borneo in medical history by successfully conducting an open-heart surgery.

On 8th March 1999, a new 4-storey outpatient building aptly called the Normah Clinic, consisting of 30 consultation suites, doctor’s offices, a lecture theatre, general administration offices and other facilities, was opened.

In July 1999, Normah Nursing School opened its door for their first intake.

In 2000, new facilities and services were upgraded or added. These include neurosurgery, urologic surgery, nephrology and medical oncology.

From 13th to 17th September 2000, Normah Medical Specialist Centre achieved yet another milestone in its pursuit of excellence in the field of Cardiothoracic surgery at an international level. On this date, Normah Medical Specialist Centre played host to an International Heart Valve Symposium known as the Mulu Rafflesia Valve Symposium (MRVS).

From 26th to 30th June 2002, Normah Medical Specialist Centre achieved another milestone. For the second time, Normah Medical Specialist Centre was given the honor to host the International Heart Valve Symposium known as the The 2nd Mulu Rafflesia Valve Symposium.

In June 2003, Normah Medical Specialist Centre opened its first Information Centre in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. It was the first Information Centre setup by Normah Medical Specialist Centre (outside Sarawak).

On 10th March 2005, Normah Medical Specialist Centre achieved their first Malaysian Society in Quality Health (MSQH) full 3-years (2005-2007) Accreditation Status award.

On 15th September 2005, Normah Medical Specialist Centre and Kolej Technologi PPKS signed an MOU to collaborate in providing Diploma in Nursing Programme.

On 3rd December 2005, another milestone was achieved by Normah Medical Specialist Centre in hosting the International Oncology Conference that was held until 4th December , 2005. The following achievement by Normah also happened on 3rd December, 2005, when the Oncology Centre was officiated by Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hon Nam. The next carved by Normah Medical Specialist Centre were the signing of MOU between American Oncologist Dr Hazem ElKassas and Normah CEO & Managing Director Dr Au Yong Kien Hoe; they were witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hon Nam and Chairman of Normah Tan Sri Bujang Bin Muhammad Noor.

On 7th March 2006, Normah Medical Specialist Centre continued to carve its name to be the first private hospital in Borneo to launch the most advance 64 Multi-Slices CT Scan machine which was officiated by Chairman Tan Sri Bujang Bin Muhammad Noor.

2008 – Normah Medical Specialist Centre was reaccredited for the second time by Malaysia Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) for the period of 2008-2011.

On 9th March 2016, Normah Medical Specialist Centre was reaccredited for the fifth time by Malaysia Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) and successfully obtained full 4-year Accreditation Status award (2016-2020).

On 3rd June 2017, Normah Medical Specialist Centre was reaccredited for the third time by Joint Commission International (JCI) and successfully obtained full 3-year Accreditation Status award (2017-2022).

Normah Medical Specialist Centre had carved yet another history and milestone when it was awarded the prestigious The BrandLaureate SMEs Best Brand Award 2019 – Most Established Brand Award for Best Brand in Healthcare Private Specialist Centre from the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation

On 1st January 2021, Normah Medical Specialist Centre was reaccredited for the forth time by Joint Commission International (JCI) and was successfully awarded another full 3-year Accreditation Status (2021-2023) for maintaining high standard of healthcare in accordance with JCI guidelines.

On 1st September 2022, Normah Medical Specialist Centre became the first medical centre in Borneo to welcome patients for robotic therapy in rehabilitation using the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) which is the world’s first wearable cyborg technology by CYBERDYNE Inc., Japan. Through the collaboration with Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) in Malaysia, Normah Medical Specialist Centre introduced robotic rehabilitation treatment to improve and regenerate the patient’s motor function.

On 3rd October 2022, Normah Medical Specialist Centre launched three (3) up-to-date medical technology and system utilizations : Azurion 3 High-tech Cardiovascular Laboratory - The 3rd generation cardiac intervention technology, equipped with integrated IVUS Intrasight (image-guided therapy system), 256-Slice Multi Detector Revolution Frontier 2.0 Computed Tomography (MSCT) Scanner, and the 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Signa Explorer. The introduction of these three (3) medical technologies and the use of the latest systems, will enable Normah Medical Specialist Center to become an excellent medical center that emphasizes on quality care with world-class standards in the region.

On 10th March 2023, Normah Medical Specialist Centre became the first hospital in East Malaysia, if not the whole region of Borneo, to launch the high-tech rehabilitation service via Robotic Therapy.

On 26th May 2023, Normah Medical Specialist Centre was once again accreditated for the sixth time by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health for 4 years until 25 May 2027.

On 25 October 2023, Normah Medical Specialist Centre became the only private hospital in Sarawak to receive the Malaysian Healthcare Icon Leadership Award from Asia Pacific Strategic Research at the National Health and Wellness Summit 2023 in Kuala Lumpur
