Normah Newsletter -
Issue No. 4 /2002
Normah Medical Specialist Centre (NMSC) in its continuous effort and commitment to promote public health awareness and provide continuous medical education to the general practitioners recently hosted a two-day medical seminar at its Auditorium. Prelude to the two-day medical seminar was a Public Forum on "Heart Attacks - Prevention and Treatment" which was attended by over 200 people from all walks of life. A complementary cholesterol screening was offered to the first 100-eligible participants; out of which 61 participants (56% male and 44% female) had their cholesterol tested. About 80% of the results turned out to be normal, 15% had hyper triglyceridaemia (high triglyceride), 2% with high-LDL cholesterol and 3% with high total cholesterol/HDL ratio. Those participants with abnormal lipid profile were advised to see their family doctors for further consultation and management. (See graphs) NMSC's Chief Executive Office, YBhg Datuk Prof. Dr. Saw Huat Seong in his welcoming address at the opening of the public forum reiterated the fact NMSC is fully committed in its vision of making NMSC as the preferred healthcare provider in the region. "We believe in working as a team and our mission through an ethical holistic approach, is to prevent disease, detect disease early so as to prevent complications, manage patients well and compassionately and maintain their quality of life, all at the cost affordable to everyone who seeks us out, stressed Datuk Saw. And for this very reason, NMSC has decided to organize its 1st Annual Normah Medical Seminar starting with Cardiology 2002 and hoping that this would become a yearly continuing medical and health education event for doctors and members of the public. ....commitment to promote public health awareness and provide continuous medical education to the general practitioners.... The doctors forum's part of this seminar whose theme emphasized on "Helping Patients with Coronary Heart Disease" registered an overwhelming response from the doctors which was well exceeding our initial target of 60-80 doctors, lamented Dr. Gabriel Teo, the Organizing Chairman for this 1st Annual Medical Seminar. A total of 120 doctors from all over Sarawak including Sabah, Brunei and Pontianak attended this seminar. The other highlight of this year's meeting was a live demonstration on exercise treadmill test, echocardiography and balloon angioplasty. In his closing remarks, the Organizing Chairman thanked everyone involved especially the drug industries for their generous sponsorship and continuous support in complementing NMSC in its endeavor to ensure that best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered.
