Emergency Services

The Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) at Normah Medical Specialist Centre is open daily for 24 hours. Currently, our department has 5 Resident Medical Officers and assisted by a qualified team of Medical Assistants and Staff Nurses.

All our Resident Medical Officers and most of the paramedic staffs have attended ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) training at an AHA (American Heart Association) accredited centre. About half of our paramedics have also attended post basic training in emergency medicine.

Emergency Care

We provide 24 hours ambulance service. Please call our emergency contact number 082-311 999 for the service. All ambulances are well-equipped with Advanced Life Support (ALS) equipment.

Patients with various emergencies will be attended immediately.
a) We will liaise with our Cardiologist for heart emergencies and patient who presented with a heart attack will receive PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention)/ Angiogram within 90 minutes from arrival, based on the international recommendation.
b) A stroke patient will be immediately sent for a head CT scan and then referred to our Neurologist or Neurosurgeon for further management. We have 24 hours imaging (eg x-rays) and laboratory services for various investigations if urgently required.

We also provide medical escort services, emergency evacuation (medivac), and both domestic and international repatriation escort services by helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. For further information, please click here to contact us.

Non-Emergency Care

We provide 24 hours medical services to walk in patients with any medical complaints. You may consult our Medical Officer and depending on your clinical condition, you may receive initial treatment or you may be advised for further treatment with our specialist doctors at their clinic.

We follow international medical triage system especially during peak hours.

Quality Improvement

We have been continuously monitoring a patient’s care and safety problem for the purpose of improving our services through root cause analysis, intervention and resolution of the problem.
a) Adult patient with chest pain who received ECG within 10 minutes (2014 until June 2016)
Result: 100 %
b) A&E Department waiting time relative to triage category (2010 until 2nd quarter 2016)
Green Zone: 100% within 90 minutes
Yellow Zone: 100% within 30 minutes
Red Zone: 100% immediately
c) Unplanned return of patient seen at A&E within 24 hours for similar complaint (2015 until September 2016)
Result: Less than 1 %
d) Adult patient with Acute Asthma being discharged after achieving PEFR of more than 75% of the predicted normal value (2016 on going)
Target: 100%

Pharmacy

Our A&E has an attached pharmacy for 24 hours access to medications.

Payment

We accept cash, personal cheque, or credit card for payment of our services. We are panel to most insurance companies and our staff will assist you to contact your insurance provider if needed.

Diagnostic Services
Pathology & Medical Laboratory Services

Pathology & Medical Laboratory Services are essential components of patient care. The department is a small part of the overall budget for a medical service, yet it impacts 60% – 70% of patient related critical decision making in matters such as admission, diagnosis, treatment and discharge. These services evaluate components of blood, body fluids, and tissue presented for investigation to assist in diagnosis of conditions and the management of disease and therapy.

Normah laboratory is committed to the goal of total quality performance technically and excellent customer service. The laboratory is a full service laboratory with the key elements necessary to support the clinical services. The Pathology staff consists of Pathologist, Microbiologist, Biochemist, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Phlebotomist and administrative staff who are all graduates from accredited training programs and universities. It is supervised by a Pathologist with vast experience and an internationally certified laboratory professional with extensive experience in international performance and quality standards. The laboratory operates 24 hours.

Normah’s laboratory is currently participating in the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) Quality Assurance Programs, Randox International Quality Assessment Scheme, UK (RIQAS) and the National External Quality Assurance Schemes for microbiology from the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), KL. Our laboratory participates in External Quality Assurance Programs to validate the quality performance and proficiency in the technical areas of our services.

What You Need to Know
Language

Our clinical staff are all conversant in English. Most of our clinical team can also communicate in the various local languages and dialects. Translators are available upon request.

Religious services

If you require religious counseling, please inform your ward supervisor. For Muslim patients, kiblat signs are available in every room. Religious books are available on request.

Tips or gratuities

Normah employees are professionally committed to making your visit as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Our employees are pleased to be of service to you at any time during your visit. Tipping is not required at the Centre.
