Pathology & Medical Laboratory Services

Pathology & Medical Laboratory Services are essential components of patient care. The department is a small part of the overall budget for a medical service, yet it impacts 60% – 70% of patient related critical decision making in matters such as admission, diagnosis, treatment and discharge. These services evaluate components of blood, body fluids, and tissue presented for investigation to assist in diagnosis of conditions and the management of disease and therapy.

Normah laboratory is committed to the goal of total quality performance technically and excellent customer service. The laboratory is a full service laboratory with the key elements necessary to support the clinical services. The Pathology staff consists of Pathologist, Microbiologist, Biochemist, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Phlebotomist and administrative staff who are all graduates from accredited training programs and universities. It is supervised by a Pathologist with vast experience and an internationally certified laboratory professional with extensive experience in international performance and quality standards. The laboratory operates 24 hours.

Normah Medical Specialist Centre provides the following clinical services:

Our laboratory participates in External Quality Assurance Programs to validate the quality performance and proficiency in the technical areas of our services.

Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging Unit

The Imaging unit is a very important support service for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It has a range of sophisticated imaging machines. The diagnostic imaging services at Normah Medial Specialist Centre are as shown below:

Fluoroscopy
This special X-Ray machine allows real time viewing of the internal organs.

X-Ray or General Radiography
Used to obtain images of internal organs such as the heart, bone, and lung. It may be static, or mobile, allowing x-rays to be done by the bedside in the wards.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is a new imaging technique using strong magnetic fields, radiowaves and a computer to produce pictures of body structure. It is able to create images of practically any part of the body, and is particularly useful in the head and spine. It is able to assess lesions which may not show up on other modalities of imaging. It does not use x-rays, thus, patients are safe from radiation exposure risk.

Computerised Tomography (CT)
CT Scan uses a computer to generate images from a series of x-rays taken. It produces cross-section pictures in several planes.

Ultrasonography
This is a very useful scanning technique using high frequency sound waves. As these waves (too high in frequency to be heard by humans) pass through tissue layers, some are bounced back, and picked up by a receiver. A computer then uses these information to create an image of that section, in real time. There is no radiation exposure risk, and the ultrasonic wave has been proven to be safe. This equipment is used to scan many areas of body.

Mammography
This is a special x-ray machine for taking fine resolution x-rays of the breast. It allows imaging of breast tissue, and can detect lesions deep in the breast tissue which is otherwise non palpable. It is effective in detecting benign and cancerous lesions. It is useful in detecting early breast cancer, allows localisation for biopsy and is used as a screening tool.

Multi-Slices Computed Tomography (MSCT) Scan
MSCT scanner is the latest new generation state-of-the-art x-ray scanner with multiple detector channels designed to obtain image data from different angles around the body, and then uses advanced computer processing the information to show detail cross-section, 2D and 3D picture of body tissues, organs and blood vessels. MSCT imaging is used to show several types of tissues-brain, lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels – with superior clarify. Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret MSCT scans of the body, doctors can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorder and early detection of stroke. MSCT scan is a patient-friendly examination that involves minimal radiation exposure.

Osteoporosis & Dexa Scan

What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a generalized bone disease that reduces the strength of your bones causing them to become brittle and consequently more prone to fractures.

Osteoporosis is four times more common in post-menopausal women than in men. Osteoporosis is usually asymptomatic in the early stage. Symptoms like back pain usually indicate severe disease. You may feel that you are getting shorter and gradually become hunchback. Frequently, a patient realizes that he or she has severe osteoporosis when there is a fracture of the spine or hip after a minor fall.

Who are more likely to suffer from Osteoporosis?
These categories of patients are more likely to suffer from Osteoporosis:
1. History of previous spine fracture
2. Women above the age of 50 years
3. Thin or small build
4. Family history of Osteoporosis
5. Early menopause (<45 years)
6. Smoking
7. Inactive lifestyle
8. Long term medications especially with steroids and thyroid hormones
9. Alcohol abuse
10. Inadequate calcium intake

Can we detect Osteoporosis before fracture of the bone?
Bone mineral density (BMD) is an indicator for osteoporosis. This can now be accurately measured and quantified using a DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) machine. DEXA is a specially designed X-ray machine to determine the BMD of the spine, hip and wrist. It uses very little radiation (less than 1/20 of a CXR).

A DEXA scan can diagnose bone loss at an early stage before you suffer from fracture and also assess your fracture risk so that early treatment can be instituted. It can also monitor the progress of your osteoporosis treatment.

How is the DEXA scan performed?
There is no preparation required. A typical DEXA scan is completely painless and only takes 10 minutes to perform. A patient is required to lie on a couch for 5 to 10 minutes and the result will be ready in within half an hour.

Restriction
Patient cannot receive the test if:
1. Scheduled less than 5 days after a barium procedure
2. Undergoing radioactive iodine thyroid therapy
3. Weight is over 2701bs (123kg)
4. There exists a possibility of pregnancy for women of child bearing age

Endoscopy

A range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy is available. They are performed by surgeons and physicians, depending on the type. They include:
1. Gastroscopy – study of the stomach and abdomen
2. Colonoscopy – study of the large intestines
3. Bronchoscopy – study of the airways of the lungs
4. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography – study of the bile ducts
5. Rhinoscopy – study of the nasal passages.

What is endoscopy used for?
When abnormalities are found, biopsy can be taken to ascertain the nature of the lesions. Polyps in the gut can be removed, without the need for an operation. Stones in the bile ducts can be removed. It can also help in the placement of feeding tubes in the stomach or breathing tube in the airways.
