Medical Surgical

Cardiology is a sub-specialty of Internal medicine dealing with diseases of the heart and its associated major blood vessels. Normah offers a cardiology service, backed up by advanced facilities for the investigation and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. The HDU area is designed as a Cardiac Care Unit as well, and accommodates up to 10 patients who require intensive cardiac monitoring.

Cardiac Catheterization

Normah’s Invasive cardiac laboratory is equipped with a biplane angiogram system. Cardiac catheterisation is a procedure where a small long catheter is inserted into an artery, usually at the groin, into the chambers of the heart, and into the coronary arteries. Services available are Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization for Coronary Angiography, Balloon Angioplasty and stent implantation.

Echo-cardiography is a technique using high frequency sound waves to obtain detailed images of the heart valves and chambers in real time. Normah has recently acquired a new high range Colour Droppler Echo machine. In addition trans-oesophageal echocardiography (TEE) allows real time imaging of the heart before and during open-heart surgery.

We also have a Holter service where 24 hour ECG recording enables the cardiologists to pick up abnormal heart rhythm in patients with palpitations.

Nephrology is a medical subspecialty that takes care of patients with medical kidney diseases. In our Kidney Centre, we provide diagnosis, treatment and support for patients with kidneys problem ranging from simple urinary tract infection to complicated care of kidney transplantation. We provide evaluation for patient who presents with haematuria (blood in the urine) and proteinuria (protein in the urine). We provide acute and chronic management of patients with all forms of glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and hereditary kidney diseases such as polycystic kidney disease. We also provide care for patients with diabetic and hypertensive kidney diseases, which are the number one and two causes of kidney failure in the world respectively. Kidney biopsy is offered to patients for diagnosis of the underlying kidney diseases.

For the unfortunate patients who have reached end-stage kidney failure, we offer the services of kidney replacement therapy in the form of haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Our Kidney Centre is located right next to the Haemodialysis Unit. We have a total of eleven haemodialysis machines and an automatic dialyzer-reprocessing unit. We provide physical isolation for patients with hepatitis B. A group of professional staffs with special training provides services to our dialysis patients. In addition to haemodialysis, we also provide service for end-stage kidney patients who choose to have peritoneal dialysis. Both continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) are supported. For suitable end-stage kidney failure patients who wish to have kidney transplant, we provide donor and recipient kidney transplant evaluation.

We work closely with the surgical subspecialty of Urology. Patients with kidney stone are frequently managed together by the combined effort of the nephrologist and urologist. Our urological colleagues provide the acute management of kidney stone disease and the nephrologist provides the necessary medical workup to prevent or reduce future kidney stone formation. In addition, dialysis access placement for haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are provided by our urological colleagues.

It also provides surgical back up to interventional cardiology as well as covering for Cardiothoracic trauma.

Neurosurgery involves treatment of diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves using predominantly surgical means. Examples of such diseases include brain tumours, blood clots in brain, occlusion of blood vessels and trapped nerves. In addition, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries do form a significant proportion of the work of any neurosurgical unit.

Normah has a fully qualified Neurosurgeon to handle such technologically demanding treatments. This is backed up by the modern neuro-imaging techniques (CT & MRI), operating equipment and intensive care facilities. In addition, the human touch by the high trained nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other support staff plays a very important role in the rehabilitation of neurosurgical patients.

Orthopaedic Surgery

‘Orthopaedic’ comes from the Latin words ‘Ortho’ (straight) and ‘Paedic’ (children). In the early days of surgery, it dealt mainly with deformities in children. Now it deals with conditions of the musculoskeletal system in all age groups.

Recent advances have widened the scope of Orthopaedics. With better understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and better instrumentation, conditions can be treated with less trauma to normal tissue. The aim is to return function of the bone and joints to normal as fast as possible.

Better internal fixation methods, implants and prosthesis allow bone and joint mechanics to be restored as closed to normal as possible. Arthroscopy and image guided surgery reduce the surgical trauma to normal tissue.

Some of the conditions commonly treated by orthopaedic surgeons are trauma (fractures, dislocation, ligamentous injuries), degenerative disorders (osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease), deformities and tumours.

All of these services are available in Normah.

Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery (ENT)

Treats ear, nose and throat disorders in both adult and children. We provide the following diagnostic services and treatment:

  1. Endoscopic evaluation of the nose, throat and larynx

  1. Endoscopic surgery for chronic sinus disease
  2. Removal of head and neck tumours
  3. Ear surgery
Urologic Surgery

The Urology Centre is well equipped and staffed to investigate and manage a range of urological conditions. The team of professional staff works together with related specialties to provide services also in lithotripsy, urodynamics, dialysis and nephrology. ESWL, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy and endoscopic lithotripsy with stone removal allow most stones to be treated without open surgery. ESWL is done with a Dornier Compact Delta machine with a resident urologist. For the man who needs assessment of the prostate or lower urinary tract symptoms, the range of diagnostic services are available within the Centre and this includes DRE (digital rectal examination), urine flow rate, TRUS (transrectal ultrasound of the prostate) and if necessary, ultrasound guided prostate biopsy. For patients with blood in the urine or pain on passing urine, urine test and endoscopy can also be done so as to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

For patients who have problems in passing urine or urinary incontinence, urodynamics is performed using a Dantec machine. Various modalities (including the safe use of Viagra) are available for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. Assessment and surgery for male subfertility is also available. Together with the resident paediatricians, all forms of paediatric urological abnormalities (e.g. hypospadias, undescended testis) are managed. Together with the nephrologist’s service, surgery for dialysis (AVF, arteriovenous fistula and peritoneal dialysis catheter) are prepared. Although Normah does not have a kidney transplantation program, we look after many patients both before and after transplantation.
